Bristol teams rule the ‘WrecK’

10579997_10152669832284104_6566933525628469645_nTeams from the Bristol Softball league dominated the last major tournament in Bristol this year , The ever popular WrecK Tournament had great weather, a big turnout, excellent facilities (as always) and at least for the locals , all the right results.

Div 1 team the Sliders came out on top of the pile by winning the main Cup against an excellent Leicester Royals side… Both teams had a revised line up after struggling to field a team in the run up to the event, The addition of Pitcher Tara Duningham from the Bristol Crushers along with Real flyers stalwarts Mark Bartholomew and Peter ( ‘Hot Pete’ ) Brealey certainly helped as Tara won the Female MVP and Mike Garza was the the other deserved winner of the Male MVP.          Leicester Royals also picked up Ringers for thier team in Pitcher Kieth Jansenn and 2 other Ritchings Park players.

The Final was unpredictably a one sided affair with Sliders overpowering the Royals with outstanding hitting throughout the line up but especially Mike Garza’s huge 320ft line drive home run in the 1st inning to take the Sliders to a 3 – 0 lead .. defensively the Sliders were also very sharp with some excellent fielding in the outfield and on the middle infield the Pitcher Tara Benjamin also  held the Royals to just 2 runs over 7 innings and rarely gave up a hit in any inning. The final score was 11-0.

The Plate final was a much closer affair with Div 1 team the Bristol Creamers eventually overcoming an experimental Wales Development Squad in the final innings to win 7-6 .. ‘We beat an entire nation’ was the often heard cry after the game but the Welsh management were philosophical saying ‘We’d not made the main final, where we’d expected to be .. so we decided to give all the players a chance to play and continue to build for future battles’.

In the other main Final the ‘C ‘ Grade battle was between the Pyros from the East midlands and the Monmouth Rockets .. another Bristol League team who’ve experienced a meteroric rise through the divisions since joining in 2011 .. They topped an excellent weekend by winning the final in fine style and taking home all the awards  with Ieuan Gale and Katie Schofield lifting the MVP  trophies.
