Hot day for the Charity Shield

On Sunday the 29th September an unusually Warm day arrived just in time for the annual Charity shield match at the Abbots Leigh Cricket Club, John and Lisa very kindly opened the bar and laid on Burgers and Hotdogs for a crowd of about 60.

The game itself was a bit of an anticlimactic low scoring affair with Jets comfortably overcoming the MVPs challenge this year and winning 7 – 2.

All the Jets played well and all the home runs in the game were scored by David Lee, Ross Maskel and Peter Helgeson, there were also outstanding contributions in the field from Claire Miller, Kim Yeates, Jo Catalano, David Jones and Mark Saunders.

Jets Manager Sarah Pattenden played her last regular Softball Game before retiring from softball completely .. the team presented her with a memorial Directors Chair printed with Sarah Pattenden: Softball Goddess and Jets Legend. Sarah will continue to be around as Jets supporter/ Scorer / critic! …but not as a player ( Unless forced to play !)

For the MVP’s  team both Stu Parkes and Rich Hawkins hit well to ensure the Jets didn’t have it all their own way .. they were ably supported by Kam Cormack, Sianne Way and Caroline Meads. .. The team was captained by Chairman Brett McIntyre who was reduced to just 5 guys when someone had to pull out late on Friday.

The MVPS Team:

Brett McIntyre, Pete Brearley, Stu Parkes, Mike Evans, Rich Hawkins, Beth Ryan, Kam Cormack, Sianne Way, Julie-anne Moore, Hayley Hodges, Caroline Meads & Karen Yeates.

The Jets Team :

Mark Saunders, David Lee, Peter Helgeson , Chris Ingle, Kevin Pattenden, Ross Maskel. Dave Jones, Jennifer Caselton, Rhian Welch, Claire Miller, Sarah Pattenden, Kim Yeates, Jo Catalano

Tradition ?….

This is (we think ?) the 5th time the Charity shield / MVP challenge match has been played and at least the 2nd time it was coupled with a brief awards ceremony for the winners & runners up of all three Divisions, MVP’s awards and Home run competition winners .. the event is usually quite well attended and the cricket club are as keen as many of us are to make it a regular end of season event.

The MVP team this year was struggling to find enough players due to people with other commitments and a lack of warning that the event would be happening  so how about we set a specific date each year to host the event and make sure everyone is well informed ? .. what do you think ?

Grab you’re nearest committee member and let them know what kind of event /awards ceremony you’d like to see happen at the end of the season.. or post some ideas on the Bristol Softball Facebook page

PICS PLEASE … we don’t have enough photos of winning teams  – submit your photos to any committee member and we’ll get it on the web site
