At the Womens National Championships this weekend the Bristol Bluebirds Womens team went one better than 2015 and won the top grade National Championships outright in a thrilling final against last years champions the Manchester Minx.
Bristol finished the Round robin section of the draw with a 4, 1 & 1 record , the draw was against the Minx and the loss was to the Edinburgh /Glasgow team the Besoms
A strong Manchester Team overcame the Besoms in their semi final and were already in the groove when they took on Bristol Bluebirds in a much anticipated final .
With a 7 run lead at the 5th inning the Minx looked strong and in control but the Bristol ladies were not worried and had demonstrated their confidence in each others ability many times in the course of the weekend. The next two innings were pitched flawlessly by Bristol pitcher Tara Dunningham and fielded outstandingly by Kat Golik (3rd base) Anna Whicher (outfield) and Holly Ireland (1st base) keeping the Mancunians down to just a couple of scores. Run support came from strong and intelligent hitting from the entire line up including a right field home run from Mandy Lewis to take a 2 run lead into the last inning.
In the top of the 7th another excellent shut out innings against the best batters in the Manchester line up confirmed the win for Bristol .
The Bluebirds ‘Captains award’ went to Home run hitter Kim Yeates
The British Softball Federation MVP award for the Final was deservedly won by consistently outstanding 3rd base player Katherine Golik
